October 2022 Fantasy Book Releases
October is the spooky season! All things witches and Halloween! That also means it is the time of the year that fantasy books start coming out in force. If you are wanting to pick up some of the October 2022 fantasy book releases, then buckle up, open your GoodReads, and start adding these to your TBR!
The Atlas Paradox
The highly anticipated sequel to the Atlas Six, The Atlas Paradox, is set to release on October 25, 2022.
Originally a self-published book, this series rose to fame on BookTok and BookTube and ended up getting picked up by a traditional publisher.
Of course, as a sequel, giving you too much synopsis will spoil it, so I will tell you about book 1. This is a dark academia fantasy following 6 adults who are competing for 5 spots within the mystical society of the Library of Alexandria.
Poster Girl
The newest book from acclaimed fantasy writer Veronica Roth, Poster Girl, will release on October 18, 2022.
Poster Girl is an adult dystopian novel. It follows the story of a woman’s search for a missing girl after the collapse of an oppressive regime. During her search, she uncovers dark secrets about her community and her own family.
Now she must find this missing girl and earn her own freedom.
The Sacrifice
The Sacrifice is a supernatural horror set to release on October 4, 2022.
In this book, we follow a film crew as they visit a legendary island near the Philippines. This island is known for rumors of a sleeping god, waiting to awake. The crew is determined to figure it out and find the evidence the rumors are true. Until everything goes from good to bad, to worse.
This sounds like a great spooky read for the Halloween season. And of course, yay for a standalone book!
Monarch Rising
A new YA dystopian, Monarch Rising comes out on October 4, 2022. When I first read the description of this book, it sounded very reminiscent of some of my old-school dystopian faves.
According to Goodreads, this book is “In a chilling near-future New United States of America, Jo Monarch has grown up in the impoverished borderlands of New Georgia. She’s given one chance to change her fate… if she can survive a boy trained to break hearts.”
Sounds like this debut novel is going to hit the market with a bang this October.
The Whispering Dark
Coming out on October 18, 2022, The Whispering Dark is pitched as a “dark and dreamlike tale of love and sacrifice”.
We follow two main characters, Delaney, a def girl, and Colton, a boy who awoke from his own death at 9 years old. These two have an inexplicable connection, though they have been told to stay far away from one another.
The pair end up having to pair up to figure out a mystery at their university when a student turns up dead.
This sounds like a dark forbidden love/friendship book with supernatural elements.
Strike the Zither
The first in a new fantasy series, Strike the Zither comes out on October 25, 2022. This Chinese-inspired fantasy by Joan He sounds like it is going to be a wonderful and powerful series.
We follow Zephyr, a young girl who was orphaned at a young age. She has risen through the ranks as a strategist serving under a female warlord. Now, she has to go undercover to infiltrate the enemy army camp.
I am a sucker for infiltration and characters having to go undercover. It is one of my favorite fantasy tropes.
The Sevenfold Hunters
Okay, so this is technically Sci-Fi. Though not a fantasy book release, it still sounds amazing! The Sevenfold Hunters come out on October 25, 2022.
We are in a far future following a hijabi alien hunter! She attends an elite academy and her life goal is to rid the Earth of aliens for good. Everything is going great until one of her elite squad members is killed. He is then replaced by some sub-par new recruit who fails every exam. For some reason, the school won’t kick her out though. The team is unraveling, secrets start to come to light, and the true plight of the aliens is starting to become known.
While I don’t read a ton of sci-fi, I have been picking up more lately. This sounds like my kind of sci-fi too.
Night of the Raven, Dawn of the Dove
Royalty, loyalty, and secrets. Night of the Raven, Dawn of the Dove comes out on October 18, 2022. This sounds like it is high in political intrigue with forbidden magic and a forgotten past.
We follow Katyani, who is an advisor and guard of the Crown Prince. She was bound to the Queen at a young age through a forbidden soul bond. Now, she is the best guard the palace has ever seen. But when a rash of assassination attempts threaten the royals, she is sent on a mission to escort the prince and his cousin as they venture to learn more about how to rule.
When they are summoned back to the palace though, Kayyani’s life is turned upside down. She is thrown out of the only life she has ever known. now alone and betrayed, she must figure out now only who she is, but how she can save everything she loves.
The Storyteller’s Death
The final October 2022 fantasy book release comes out on October 4, 2022. The Storyteller’s Death seems like a lighter fantasy. Much closer to magical realism and speculative fiction than high fantasy. The synopsis also gives me adult-Encanto vibes and I am living for it.
We follow Isla. After her dad dies, he mom starts to leave her with her grandmother in Puerto Rico every single summer. The grandmother is an amazing storyteller, but when Isla is 18, she sadly passes away. This is when Isla realizes her grandmother’s gift has been passed down to her, as it has been for generations. She now knows that the tales of the dead family members are bought back to life. They replay to her over and over.
She is at first enchanted, but that turns sour when she realizes she needs to solve an old family murder in order to make the loop end.
