The Drowning Empire Series by Andrea Stewart
The Drowning Empire is a fantasy series by Andrea Stewart set in a world where magic is powered by the bones of the living. The series follows the story of Lin, the emperor’s daughter, who is trying to prove her worth despite her missing memories; Jovis, a smuggler with a tragic past; and Phalue, the daughter of a governor who wants to do better than her father, as they navigate the dangerous waters of power and betrayal.
The first book in the series, The Bone Shard Daughter, was released in 2020. The second book, The Bone Shard Emperor, was released in 2021. Finally, The Bone Shard War was released in April 2023.
This completed fantasy series has a little of everything. It has romance, animal companions, unwilling heroes, and forbidden magic. The Drowning Empire takes the best fantasy tropes and uses them unexpectedly.
With richly drawn characters and a gripping plot, this series is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
The Poppy War by RF Kuang
The Poppy War trilogy by RF Kuang is a dark and intense series that explores the horrors of war and the price of power. Set in a world inspired by Chinese history and mythology, the series follows the story of Rin, a war orphan who discovers she has the power to summon the gods and unleash devastating destruction. As she navigates the treacherous world of politics and warfare, Rin must confront the brutal realities of power and the sacrifices it demands.
If you plan to read The Poppy War, I recommend checking out the trigger warnings. This series gets very dark in parts. The characters are morally grey, to the point of being unlikable. Rin is a strong female lead, but that doesn’t mean you always agree with her decisions.
With complex characters and a vividly realized world, this completed fantasy book series is a must-read.
The Broken Earth Series by NK Jemesin
The Broken Earth Trilogy is a science fantasy series by N.K. Jemisin. It consists of three novels: The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, and The Stone Sky. The series is set in a world where the land is in a constant state of change. People with special powers called orogenes are feared and persecuted.
The story follows three characters trying to survive in this dangerous world: Essun, a powerful orogene, and a mother trying to find her daughter. Syenite is a young orogene who is being trained to be a weapon. And Alabaster, an ancient orogene who is trying to save the world.
The Broken Earth Trilogy presents a challenging yet rewarding science fiction work. Jemisin’s characters are well-developed and complex, while her world is terrifying and fascinating. The series powerfully explores themes of power, oppression, and hope.
The Broken Earth Trilogy succeeded critically and commercially. Jemisin won the Hugo Award for Best Novel three times in a row, making her the first author to do so. Critics have praised the series for its diverse characters and exploration of complex themes.
The Broken Earth Trilogy broke new ground in science fiction and significantly impacted the genre. Fans of science fiction, fantasy, and literature should read it.
The Shades of Magic by VE Schwab
The next completed fantasy book series you need to read is The Shades of Magic by VE Schwab.
The series is a portal fantasy that features four Londons.
Magic in Red London is vibrant and dangerous. In Grey London, magic is outlawed. White London uses magic as a tool of the cruel and powerful. In Black London, the Old Kingdom’s home, magic is beautiful and deadly.
Kell, a traveler between worlds, is the protagonist of the series. He is tasked with stealing a powerful magical object from Black London and gets drawn into a dangerous conspiracy. While on his mission, he joins forces with Delilah Bard, a street-smart thief, and Rhy Maresh, the Prince of Red London. Together, they aim to save all four Londons from a terrible threat.
The Shades of Magic series is a fast-paced and action-packed adventure. Additionally, it features a cast of complex and well-developed characters.
The Queens of Renthia Series by Sarah Beth Durst
The Queens of Renthia series by Sarah Beth Durst is a completed trilogy with a world where everything has a spirit. The spirits of Renthia are powerful and dangerous. And they are slowly driving humans to extinction. The only thing that stands between humans and extinction is the Queen and her heirs because they are the only ones who can control the spirits.
The story in the series follows three queens. Daleina is a young girl who wants to help people despite her minimal powers. Naelin is a powerful woman who prefers to be a mother to her children than trying to be the next Queen. And Ven is a champion who is finding a new queen for Renthia. Remember that you won’t meet Naelin, my favorite character, until the second book.
They must work together to find a way to defeat the spirits and save Renthia.
The Mistborn Series by Brandon Sanderson
The Mistborn series is a heist fantasy in Sanderson’s Cosmere. This series is an excellent Sanderson starting place and a great intro to adult fantasy.
This world has two eras, with at least two more planned. These books connect to the greater Cosmere in fun ways that you will enjoy discovering.
A thousand years ago, the Lord Ruler enslaved the people of the Final Empire with the power of a magical metal called Atium. A group of thieves led by Kelsier planned to overthrow Lord Ruler and free the people. They succeed in killing the Lord Ruler, but they soon realize that his death is not the end of their problems. The Final Empire is still dangerous, and the thieves must find a way to rebuild society and create a new government.
The Devabad Trilogy by SA Chakraborty
The Daevabad Trilogy is an epic adult fantasy in an alternate 18th-century Middle East. In this world djinn, marid, ifrit, and other creatures of myth live alongside humans. However, humans are unaware of the existence of these beings.
Nahri, a con woman with healing powers, accidentally summons Dara, a powerful djinn warrior, while trying to escape her pursuers in Cairo.
