Must Read Fantasy Dragon Books
Dragons are a staple of fantasy. When people think of fantasy books, they tend to think of dragons. So many of these dragon books have become extremely popular, especially recently with the insane popularity of Game of Thrones. So if you are looking for some more fantasy books with dragons, then check out this list and escape into a magical world filled your the perfect dragon companions.
Game of Thrones
We won’t spend too much time on this one, but the Song of Ice and Fire series ( better known now as Game of Thrones) is one of the most popular fantasy series featuring dragons out right now.
This is a dark and brutal epic fantasy. It is highly political in nature and follows a very large cast of characters. One of our main characters is the Mother of Dragons, so of course, there are dragons.
This is a great book for anyone who loved the show or who really loves dark epic fantasy. One thing about this series though, is that it is not finished. Honestly, we aren’t even sure if it will ever be finished at this point. So be aware of that if you decide you want to pick this one up.
Dragon Mage
If you are looking for a dragon book that is epic in scope but not anywhere near as dark as Game of Thrones, then Dragon Mage by ML Spencer may be perfect for you.
This is a self-published fantasy book, and you can even read it for free on Kindle Unlimited! It is the first book in a series and follows two main characters.
Aram is an autistic boy from a small village. He is looked down upon by everyone except for his only friend Marcus. Marcus is the son of an abusive drunkard. They both want to get out of their village, and when the chance arises they take it.
This sets them on an epic journey that both bonds them and separates them. Aram is an unknowing source of great magic, and the crown wants to drain him and use him for every last drop. Marcus is a shield who has a natural ability to not be touched by magic.
Oh, and of course, there are dragons! So many dragons! This is a great epic fantasy that I really think a wide variety of readers will enjoy!
Bright Star
Not a perfect book, but a really fun fantasy standalone, Bright Star by Erin Swan is a really great and easy read if you want a fun dragon fantasy.
This is a YA fantasy book with a pretty straightforward plot. We follow Andra, an indentured servant who interrupts a dragon pairing ceremony, and is cast out of her home and sent to a terrible lord as his servant. After a traumatic experience leaves her mute, she lives a life of silence and sadness.
When a rebel group breaks into her master’s home, she is “taken” by the rebels and ends up becoming a rebel herself. This is a pretty typical YA fantasy with dragons but I really had a good time with it. There is a really great romance ( and no love triangle), dragon bonds, revolution, and all the tropes I love in my fantasy books.
Is it a little predictable? Yes. But it is also just a good time!
Blazewrath Games
The Blazewrath Games is a contemporary YA fantasy with, you guessed it, dragons.
We follow Lana as she is invited to join the Puerto Rican Blazewrath team. Blazewrath is a game, similar to some sort of lacrosse but played with dragon riders. Lana is swept into this world and starts competing with her new team as a runner, the only member of the team who does not ride a dragon.
While it seems like just a fun dragon sports book, we quickly learn that there are a lot of politics working under the surface that affect much more than just the game.
Fireborne
If you want a YA fantasy book that borders on adult with strong friendships, revolution, politics, and of course, dragons, then check out Fireborne by Rosario Munda.
In this series, we follow Lee and Annie. Lee is the son of the ousted ruling class, hiding among the common people in an orphanage where he was raised. Annie is an orphan in the same orphanage, and they became quick friends. Her family was killed by the former ruling class prior to them being ousted.
Now, the two of them are competing to be the dragon rider general for the new regime. But with all the change, they are starting to see that this new regime may not be any better than the one that was ousted.
If you only pick up one series from this list, this is the one that comes with my highest recommendation. I even have a full spoiler-free Fireborne review on my YouTube channel.
Shadow of the Gods
Shadow of the Gods is the first in a fantasy series by John Gwynne. This is a little different than most of the other dragon books on this list though since there isn’t a dragon rider bond in place or anything like that.
In this world, some people have the blood of the old gods. These people have animalistic traits and are typically enslaved by the ruling class. We follow multiple PoVs, from a mom trying to find her son to a former slave working for his freedom.
The dragon aspect of this book comes with one of the old gods that people are trying to free. This massive dragon god has sealed away and for good reason. She isn’t a friendly dragon by any means! Honestly, we don’t see much of the dragon in book 1, but book 3, Hunger of the Gods, gives us much more of this character as well as some of the other old gods.
Rage of Dragons
Though not one of my personal favorites, I seem the be the odd one out on this one. So many people love Rage of Dragons, so I wanted to put it on this list.
In this book, we have women who can call down dragons to fight for them, and men are warriors fighting for these women. We follow Tau, a poor boy who wants to escape his future of being a warrior. He knows he will simply be cannon fodder due to his poor upbringing.
One day though, his life changes and he swears revenge on everyone involved in his triggering event as well as the system as a whole. This is a gritty and darker fantasy book that focuses on revenge!
Temeraire ( His Majesty’s Dragon)
A Natural History of Dragons
Eragon
If you want a middle-grade dragon fantasy, then pick up Eragon. This is a super popular series and for good reason! It is loved by adults and kids, and really is a great intro to dragon fantasy!
When fifteen-year-old Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.
Really great for new fantasy readers and people who want something fun and easy!
Seraphina
A lesser talked about dragon fantasy, Seraphina is a really fun series for dragon lovers!
Seraphina is a half-dragon, descended from a dragon mother who took human form and a father who has no particular fondness for Seraphina’s kind.
In this world, dragons are not beloved. While they work side by side with humans, tensions run high and hostilities are just beginning. Seraphina doesn’t let anyone know her secret but when a member of the royal family is brutally murdered, she’s suddenly thrust into the spotlight, drawn into the investigation alongside the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian.
The Dragon Keeper
From the always amazing Robin Hobb, The Dragon Keeper is a fantasy book set in her Realm of the Elderlings. While some of her other books may be more popular, this isn’t a series to pass on.
Too much time has passed since the powerful dragon Tintaglia helped the people of the Trader cities stave off an invasion of their enemies. The Traders have forgotten their promises, weary of the labor and expense of tending earthbound dragons who were hatched weak and deformed by a river turned toxic.
So if you are looking for some epic dragon fantasy, these books are a great place to start! Let me know what your favorite fantasy book with dragons is so I can check out even more awesome stories.
