Fantasy Book Releases September 2022
September is coming up quickly! It is almost time for crisp weather, hot drinks, and most importantly EPIC fantasy book releases. For some reason, it feels like Fall is the time of the year that so many fantasy books come out. This year there looks to be a ton of great fantasy books and sequels coming out. So if you are wondering what you should pre-order for the month, keep reading and add some of these to your TBR.
Last of the Talons by Sophie Kim
Coming out on September 27th, Last of the Tallons by Sophie Kim is the first in a new YA fantasy series.
We follow Shin Lina, an eighteen-year-old who has been forced to become the living and breathing weapon for a crime family. The only thing keeping her from turning on her handlers is the threat hanging over the life of her beloved younger sister.
But the order to steal a priceless tapestry from a Dokkaebi temple incites not only the wrath of a legendary immortal but the beginning of an unwinnable game.
Bindle Punk Bruja by Desideria Mesa
Coming out on September 13th is Brindle Punk Bruja. A Mexican-inspired standalone fantasy book set in the golden twenties era.
According to the Goodreads synopsis, this book is described as “A part-time reporter and club owner takes on crooked city councilmen, mysterious and deadly mobsters, and society’s deeply rooted sexism and racism. All while keeping her true identity and magical abilities hidden –inspired by an ancient Mexican folktale.”
This book is pitched as Boardwalk Empire meets the Vanishing Half with Earth Magic.
Honestly, that alone has me interested in picking this up! I actually received an ARC of this one recently, so I will update you on social media with my full review when I finish reading it.
Monsters Born and Made by Tanvi Berwah
Monsters Born and Made will be hitting shelves on September 6, 2022.
I am a sucker for dystopian books, and this seems like it is going to fill that space. It is described as “Perfect for fans of The Hunger Games and Fable. This South Asian-inspired fantasy is a gripping debut about the power of the elite, the price of glory, and one girl’s chance to change it all.”
From what I can tell, this is supposed to be a YA standalone fantasy book (in a way). The Author stated in a response to a question on Goodreads that they envision the second book as a bridge story. It will be in the world, but both books would be able to stand on their own.
Notorious Sorcerer by Davinia Evans
The first in a new series, this book comes out on September 13th.
Notorious Sorcerer sounds like it is going to be an epic fantasy darker fantasy. In this world, magic is no longer allowed. Inquisitors violently ensure that the “peace is kept”. But when our main character accidentally showcases impossible power in public, he is catapulted into the limelight.
A dazzling fantasy bursting with wild magic, chaotic sword-fighting street gangs, brazen flirting, malevolent harpies, and one defiant alchemist.
The Witch and the Tsar by Olesya Salnikova Gilmore
A fantasy debut coming out on September 20, 2022. The Witch and the Tsar is a witchy fantasy book. It weaves together Russian myth and history. Breathing new life into a classic story that you think you have heard time and time again.
We follow a maligned and immortal witch of legend known as Baba Yaga. She will risk it all to save her country and her people from Tsar Ivan the Terrible and the dangerous gods who seek to drive the twisted hearts of men.
The Genesis of Misery by Neon Yang
While this is a fantasy book releases list, I couldn’t help but include this sci-fi book coming out on September 27th.
The Genesis of Misery is Neon Yang’s debut novel! It is an immersive and electrifying “space fantasy”. Filled with high-tech space battles and politics. It also boasts a diverse cast of queer characters including pilots, prophetic heirs, and princesses.
One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig
Maiden. Monster. Martyr. One Dark comes out on September 27th and sounds like the perfect darker fantasy book! I mean, that tagline! I am HOOKED just from that.
This is a dark, lushly gothic fantasy about a maiden who must unleash the monster within to save her kingdom. But the monster in her head isn’t the only threat lurking.
Coven by Jennifer Dugan
Looking for a queer, paranormal graphic novel? Coven, out on September 6th, is just that and more!
This is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel that follows a young witch who is racing to solve the violent supernatural murders of her coven members before the killer can strike again.
Fairy Tale by Stephen King
Okay, so I am not normally a big King fan. I don’t read a lot of horror books, and that’s what most of his books seem to be. But his newest book Fairy Tale coming out September 6th sounds right up my alley.
In this book, we follow a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world. In this world, good and evil are at war! The stakes are high. Reaching from this parallel world all the way into the “real” world.
Following a lot of well-known fantasy tropes, we have the ordinary guy forced to be a hero. Knowing King though, there’s no doubt that these tropes will be flipped and turned and done in new and fun ways.
Court of the Vampire Queen by Katee Robert
Coming out on September 6th, Court of The Vampire Queen is a fantasy romance by acclaimed author Katee Robert.
If her other books are anything to go off of, this will be a dark and seductive fantasy romance.
We follow a half-human, half-vampire main character who only wants to escape her father’s control. She ends up being gifted to a dark, powerful, and seductive vampire instead due to her father’s bid for power.
Based on the synopsis, this sounds like a reverse harem romance as well. Not normally my jam, but this sounds quite titillating.
Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
The third book in the beloved sci-fantasy Locked Tomb series, Nona the Ninth is set to come out on September 13th.
This is a sci-fantasy pitched as “lesbian necromancers in space”. Other than that, this is a series you should go into blind! Pick it up, and enjoy the ride!
Thistlefoot by GennaRose Nethercott
Coming out on September 13, 2022, Thistlefoot is a standalone Eastern European-inspired fairy tale fantasy.
In the tradition of modern fairy tales like Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and Naomi Novik’s Spinning Silver comes a sweeping epic rich in Eastern European folklore. A debut novel about the ancestral hauntings that stalk us, and the uncanny power of story.
An enchanted adventure illuminated by Jewish myth and adorned with lyrical prose as tantalizing and sweet as briar berries, Thistlefoot is an immersive modern fantasy saga by a bold new talent.
The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik
The conclusion to the Scholomance series, The Golden Enclaves comes out on September 27th.
The follow-up to a Deadly Education and The Last Graduate, is set to be an epic conclusion to this dark academia fantasy series.
Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young
Spells for Forgetting, a magical realism standalone, comes out on September 27th.
This book is set on a rural island steeped in mystical superstitions. We follow Emery, whose life was changed forever when the love of her life was accused of murdering her best friend.
Now, fourteen years later, she has to confront her past, and her former lover when he returns to the sleepy town. The past doesn’t always stay buried in this evocative small-town fantasy book.
House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson
The final book on this list is House of Hunger, coming out on September 27th.
In this book, a young woman is drawn into the upper echelons of a society where blood is power, in this dark and enthralling gothic novel from the author of The Year of the Witching.
